Prof. Alpha Tejan Wurie
Minister of Technical and Higher Education


 

Alpha Tejan Wurie served as a Lecturer in Chemistry at Fourah Bay College between 1983 - 1996 when he was called into the SLPP Government of Late Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah in 1996.  He served as Minister of Education, 1996 - 1998, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, 1998 - 2002; Minister of Education, Science and Technology, 2002 - 2007.

 

He was a key negotiator with Sierra Leone's Development Partners for multiple high value loans and grants to finance salaries and emoluments for the education workforce, modernization of education facilities and fast track initiatives to accelerate primary to university education.  Key amongst were: - he promulgated the separation of Njala University from University of Sierra Leone; creation of Polytechnics; consolidation of girl-child support in the Northern and Eastern Provinces and pioneered the Teaching Service Commission and NCTVA, along the better known SABABU Project.

 

In the medical field, Prof. Wurie has contributed extensively to establishing and strengthening laboratory systems to meet minimum standards as Proprietor of Ramsy Medical Laboratory and has done several publications on various subject areas. He has also contributed to the establishment of an analytical laboratory to determine chemical levels and microbial content in (water, soil, food and liquids) to assess safe levels for consumption or safe disposal.  

 

Dr. Alpha T. Wurie was made Associate Professor of Chemistry from Fourah Bah College, University of Sierra Leone, in 2012, but was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Chartered Chemist, and a visiting Research Fellow, Greenwich University, UK, in 2008 and as Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science (UK) in 2019.

He is a recipient of multiple awards both in politics and professional life. He is a member of Oxford Round Table (2005) and National Premier Award, holder as Commander of the Republic of Sierra Leone (CORSL) 2007.

 

Prof. Alpha Tejan Wurie was the first Minister of Health and Sanitation in the New Direction of the SLPP Led Government of Brigadier (Rtd.) Dr. Julius Maada Bio, that professionally addressed COVID - 19 pandemic and embarked on a comprehensive Health System Strengthening of Sierra Leone, from April 2018 - January, 2021. 

 

Prof. Dr. Alpha T. Wurie now serve as Minister of Technical and Higher Education for the Republic of Sierra Leone.
